Presentation Synopsis for “Emotions in UX Design, a Mobile UI Designer’s Perspective”
The mobile application market has exploded since the Apple App Store opened in July 2008. More than 85,000 apps became available in a little more than 1 year (about 8 apps per hour). The Android Market opened in October 2008 with quicker approval process, promises larger user base as the number of Android phone grows. As UI and UX designers, how can we attract and engage consumers in this crowded and quick-changing attention economy? Beyond user-friendliness, what are the new boundaries, thinking and toolsets that user experience/user interface designers should engage with?

This presentation provides a snapshot of a veteran mobile UI designer’s point of view on emotions and interaction design. Started from his graduate course work, it captures the current research and thoughts on how companies can differentiate from competition, engage with end-users and build brand loyalty by addressing emotional needs of consumers.

The presentation will be engaging and useful for people from a range of disciplines, including product managers, business managers, marketing & advertising professionals, and engineers.

Calling all mobile startups! Join our booth at 4G World!

August 27th, 2009 Anthony Hand Posted in Events | No Comments »

As you may have heard already, 4G World 2009 will be in town Sept. 15 - 28. There are lots of cool things going on, including workshops, lectures, and of course the Expo (exhibit) hall. Here are a couple of links to learn more:

The good folks who are putting 4G World together have graciously provided MoMo Chicago with a 10×10 booth in the Expo Hall. As an organization whose mission is to help grow the mobile industry in Chicago and the Midwest, the executive committee would like to take advantage of this opportunity to promote local mobile startups.

Here is more information about how your company can participate in 4G World on the cheap:
  • WHO: We are looking for 3 or 4 mobile startups to commit to staffing the booth for both days. Especially encouraged are startups who focus on software, web services, or hardware. Only those startups located in Chicago or the near Midwest will be considered.
  • WHAT: This is a small shared space, so we’ll coordinate sharing tables, space for signs, etc. But please plan on offering demos of your offerings, literature to learn more about your company, etc.
  • WHEN: Two days only — Wed., 9/16, from 12:30 - 7 pm; and Thurs., 9/17, from 12 - 5 pm. Please commit to staffing the entire periods on both days. And please arrive at least an hour early both days to set up.
  • WHERE: McCormick Place convention center, Chicago
  • COST: Free*! Though donations to help cover a few minor costs would be greatly appreciated.
  • HOW: Send Anthony (see below) an email with information about your startup, your offerings, and why you deserve to be included in this cool opportunity. Please send your request by Monday, Aug. 31!!

Please feel free to help spread the word by forwarding this message to friends and colleagues.

Don’t forget - contact Anthony Hand by next Monday, Aug. 31, if you’d like to be considered for a spot in our booth at 4G World 2009!

  • Contact Anthony Hand: anthony [dot] hand [at] gmail [dot] com
P.S. –
A quick post script on the costs: We believe that the booth is being provided to us at no cost. If there end up being any unexpected costs passed to us for having the booth, we may need to pass those along. But as of right now, things look good!
